Thai news is full of abbreviations (คำย่อ), usually written with full stops: ครม., กทม., ธปท.. Headlines almost never spell them out, and the article body often doesn't either. This list gives 111 of the abbreviations you meet most in Thai news and official writing, with their full Thai forms and English meanings, grouped by topic.
How Thai abbreviations work
- Initial consonants with full stops. Most abbreviations take the first consonant of key syllables: คณะรัฐมนตรี → ครม. Newer usage sometimes drops the inner dots, so you will see both ส.ส. and สส.
- ฯ shortens a long name everyone knows: นายกฯ for นายกรัฐมนตรี, กรุงเทพฯ for the full ceremonial name of Bangkok. ฯลฯ means "etc."
- Read them as full words. When reading aloud, Thais usually say the full form or the letter names: ครม. is read คอ-รอ-มอ, and กทม. is read กอ-ทอ-มอ.
- Context decides. Some abbreviations have more than one meaning. กก. is kilogram on a price tag but the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in a politics story; ม. is a university in ม.เกษตรศาสตร์ but a village number in an address.
