How to read Thai news: a guide for advanced learners
The words, headline style, abbreviations and sentence patterns that make Thai news different, and a routine for reading it.
You can read Thai script, you know the everyday grammar, and yet a Thai news article still feels like a wall of text. That is normal. Thai news is written in a formal register with its own vocabulary, a compressed headline style, a lot of abbreviations and very long sentences. Each of these can be learned, and once you know them, real Thai news becomes readable. This is also exactly the kind of Thai the long passages of the CU-TFL reading test use.
1. Formal written Thai uses different words
Many everyday words have a formal equivalent that news writers use instead. Learn them in pairs so you recognise the formal word when you see it.
| Spoken | Written (news) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| บอกว่า | กล่าวว่า / ระบุว่า | said, stated |
| ได้ | ได้รับ | received, got |
| ทำ | ดำเนินการ | carry out, proceed |
| ช่วย | ให้ความช่วยเหลือ | help, assist |
| ดู | พิจารณา | consider, review |
| อยาก | ต้องการ | want, need |
| ตอนนี้ | ปัจจุบัน / ขณะนี้ | now, at present |
| เยอะ | จำนวนมาก | a large number of |
| เพราะ | เนื่องจาก | because, due to |
| เลย | จึง | so, therefore |
| ไม่ได้ | มิได้ | did not (formal) |
Formal Thai also turns verbs into nouns. Put การ before an action verb and ความ before a state or quality: จัดสรร (allocate) becomes การจัดสรร (allocation), and มั่นคง (secure) becomes ความมั่นคง (security). News writing is full of these nouns, so practise spotting the verb inside them. For the passive, ถูก is used for things that happen to someone, often unpleasant (ถูกจับกุม, was arrested), and ได้รับ for positive ones (ได้รับการแต่งตั้ง, was appointed).
2. Reading headlines
Headlines (พาดหัวข่าว) drop small words and use short, punchy verbs. A typical one looks like this:
ครม. ไฟเขียวงบปี 71 เน้นอาหารมั่นคง-พลังงานสะอาด
Read it as: the Cabinet (ครม.) gives the green light (ไฟเขียว) to the 2571 budget (งบปี 71), focusing on food security and (the dash) clean energy. These headline verbs come up again and again:
| Headline word | Plain Thai | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ไฟเขียว | อนุมัติ / เห็นชอบ | give the green light, approve |
| ชง | เสนอ | propose, put forward |
| เคาะ | ตัดสินใจ / กำหนด | finalise, settle on |
| จ่อ | เตรียมจะ / ใกล้จะ | be about to |
| ตีตก | ไม่อนุมัติ | reject, vote down |
| ปัด | ปฏิเสธ | deny, brush aside |
| ผุด | จัดตั้ง / เปิดตัว | launch, set up |
| พุ่ง | เพิ่มขึ้นมาก | soar |
| ร่วง / ดิ่ง | ลดลงมาก | fall, plunge |
3. Common abbreviations
Thai news abbreviates the names of institutions, offices and places, usually with full stops. The first mention in the article body sometimes gives the full name; headlines almost never do.
| Abbreviation | Full form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ครม. | คณะรัฐมนตรี | the Cabinet |
| นายกฯ | นายกรัฐมนตรี | the Prime Minister |
| รมว. | รัฐมนตรีว่าการ | Minister (of a ministry) |
| ส.ส. | สมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎร | member of the House of Representatives |
| ส.ว. | สมาชิกวุฒิสภา | senator |
| กกต. | คณะกรรมการการเลือกตั้ง | the Election Commission |
| พ.ร.บ. | พระราชบัญญัติ | an Act (law) |
| กทม. | กรุงเทพมหานคร | Bangkok |
| สธ. | กระทรวงสาธารณสุข | Ministry of Public Health |
| ศธ. | กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ | Ministry of Education |
| ธปท. | ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย | Bank of Thailand |
| ททท. | การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย | Tourism Authority of Thailand |
| ตร. | ตำรวจ | police |
| รพ. | โรงพยาบาล | hospital |
| จ. / อ. / ต. | จังหวัด / อำเภอ / ตำบล | province / district / subdistrict |
| พ.ศ. | พุทธศักราช | Buddhist Era year |
The symbol ฯ also shortens a known long name, as in นายกฯ for นายกรัฐมนตรี or แผนพัฒนาฯ for the national development plan.
4. Long sentences and connectors
Thai has no full stop, and news sentences often run for several clauses. Find the main subject and verb first, then follow the connectors that join the clauses. These are the ones to know well:
| Connector | What it does |
|---|---|
| ทั้งนี้ | in this regard; adds a condition or detail about what was just said |
| นอกจากนี้ | in addition, moreover |
| อย่างไรก็ตาม | however |
| ดังนั้น / จึง | therefore, so |
| ขณะที่ | while, whereas |
| แม้ว่า / ทั้งที่ | although, even though |
| โดย | by, with; also introduces details: "…, with …" |
| ซึ่ง | which, who; starts a clause that explains the noun before it |
| เพื่อ | in order to, for |
| ตาม | according to, in line with |
| ดังกล่าว | the aforementioned; points back to something already named |
A spaced gap in Thai text usually marks the end of a sentence or a clause, so use the spaces as your full stops. When a sentence is still too long, write it out with a line break at each ซึ่ง, โดย or เพื่อ.
5. Who said what: reporting verbs
News is built on statements. The verb tells you how something was said, which matters for questions about the speaker's view.
| Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|
| กล่าวว่า | said |
| ระบุว่า | stated, specified |
| เปิดเผยว่า | revealed, disclosed |
| เผยว่า | revealed (shorter, common in headlines) |
| ชี้แจงว่า | explained, clarified |
| ยืนยันว่า | confirmed, insisted |
| แถลงว่า | announced in a statement |
| รายงานว่า | reported |
6. Dates and numbers
- Years are in the Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.): subtract 543 to get the Western year, so พ.ศ. 2569 is 2026. Headlines shorten years: ปี 71 means 2571, which is 2028.
- The fiscal year (ปีงบประมาณ) runs from 1 October to 30 September, so fiscal year 2571 starts on 1 October 2570.
- Months are abbreviated: ม.ค. ก.พ. มี.ค. เม.ย. พ.ค. มิ.ย. ก.ค. ส.ค. ก.ย. ต.ค. พ.ย. ธ.ค..
- Large numbers are counted in ล้าน (million): พันล้าน is a billion, หมื่นล้าน ten billion, ล้านล้าน a trillion. 137,500 ล้านบาท is 137.5 billion baht.
- Percent is ร้อยละ in formal text, often written before the number: ร้อยละ 3.6.
7. A reading routine that works
- Read the headline and first paragraph and guess the story before you look anything up. Thai news puts the main facts first.
- Read the whole article once without a dictionary, marking words you do not know. Aim to get the gist.
- Look up only the words that block the meaning, and write them with their formal-spoken pair or a Thai definition.
- Break the two longest sentences into clauses using the connectors above, and translate them.
- Summarise the article in two or three Thai sentences, then answer: who, what, why, and what does the writer think?
Twenty minutes a day with one article builds the vocabulary and speed that real reading, and the CU-TFL, demand.

Questions
Why is Thai news harder to read than textbook Thai?
News uses formal written Thai: different words for everyday ideas, long sentences with no full stops, abbreviations and Buddhist Era dates. Textbooks mostly teach spoken Thai, so news needs its own vocabulary and reading habits.
What level do I need to read Thai news?
You should read Thai script fluently and know everyday grammar. With that base, a vocabulary of formal news words and practice breaking long sentences into parts will take you to reading real news.
How do I convert Thai years to Western years?
Subtract 543 from the Buddhist Era year: พ.ศ. 2569 is 2026. Headlines often shorten the year, so ปี 71 means 2571, which is 2028.
