26 Tonnes of Chicken and a Forged Permit: A Gap in Food Safety

About the article

On 27 October 2026, Department of Livestock Development officers and consumer-protection police stopped two 22-wheel trucks at the Phetchaburi animal quarantine checkpoint in Cha-am. They were carrying 26,004 kg of frozen chicken breast from Thanyaburi (Pathum Thani) to a cold store in Songkhla, with a forged carcass-transport permit (form ร.3). The meat was seized and sampled for pathogens. A follow-up search of warehouses in Thanyaburi, thought to be used to illegally process chicken parts for export, found another 726 kg of meat of unknown origin and cutting equipment. Pathum Thani is a bird-flu surveillance zone, so every movement of poultry carcasses needs a permit. The operators have five working days to show valid documents or face prosecution under the Animal Epidemics Act 2015: up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both.
