Cost of Living and Debt: Time for a Financial Health Check

About the article

National Statistical Office data for 2026 show that 69.9% of Thais worry about the cost of living and 63.8% say their income doesn't match their spending. Commerce Ministry figures show that 62.44% of those sampled had debt in February 2026, up from 50.99% a year earlier. People earning over 50,000 baht a month have the highest share of debtors, partly because of home and car loans. The Department of Mental Health found that about 19% of people at mental-health risk were stressed about income or debt. Ramet Sasirutpornchai of KKP compares financial health to physical health and advises regular check-ups rather than waiting for a crisis. He says good financial health means balanced cash flow, an emergency fund of 3–6 months' essentials, adequate insurance and an investment portfolio that fits your goals, not necessarily huge savings or zero debt.
