น้ำผึ้งมรกต: ของดีจากป่าพรุ สู่ความหวังของชายแดนใต้

Emerald Honey: A Treasure from the Peat Swamps and Hope for the Deep South

About the article

Researchers at Princess of Naradhiwas University spent four years (2021–2024) studying honey from stingless bees (ชันโรง, Heterotrigona itama) in Narathiwat. When the samet khao (Melaleuca) trees bloom, the honey turns shades of green, and the team says it is the world's first honey of this kind; an expert named it 'emerald honey'. They found more than 200 bioactive compounds and strong antioxidant activity. In lab tests the honey inhibited cervical, lung and colorectal cancer cells, and some compounds may protect against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, though turning this into medicine needs animal and human trials. The flowers bloom only about four months a year, so supply is limited. The team is planting more trees and training villagers. Emerald honey sells for up to 5,000 baht a kilo, and poor households' incomes have risen by more than half on average.
